Tribute to an old pal
Created by ps 4 years ago
Tony and I worked for the same firm back in the early 80's at an Insurance company, then called Guardian Royal Exchange (GRE). He worked in the service (FOH) dept. and I worked in the commercial dept. Not sure how it happened but he found out that we were having lots of fun in my dept. so he wangled an internal transfer and we ended up not only working together but sitting together too. Fun times ahead indeed. We would go out for lunch, sometimes much longer than our allotted hour or arrange to go after work as at that time, I lived in Caterham and he lived with his M&D in Whyteleafe. It wasn't long before we were getting up to all kinds of mischief going out locally, or into Croydon or further afield or wherever we could find some decent dance music to listen to and have a few beers, this was a weekly affair albeit interrupted by my girlfriends or football training. He became a really good pal as not only did I introduced him to all my Caterham pals but Tony also became a regular player for our local football team, "Caterham Town" which was born out of too many beers whilst drinking in the Blacksmith Arms on the high street. He managed to make a good impression on my father too, which was a rare quality indeed, as I recall my father and Tony talking regularly about football and other stuff whilst I was getting ready to go out. Tony and I also managed to grab a boys week away to Puerto Banus, Marbella and lets just say, what goes on tour, stays on tour. We laughed for a whole week. I was fortunate enough to meet up with Tony earlier in 2020 after many years of not seeing each other and I am so glad we did. We just fell back into the same old routine chat and banter that we had always had which is a testament to a solid friendship we had had all those years ago. So sad to hear the passing of such a nice fella who had a lovely nature, a charming personality and lots of integrity. RIP Tony. It was great to know you and be part of your life. Paul Smith
